New Facility Added to Father Joe's Villages
By Mark Tsuchiya
In its ongoing efforts to provide assistance to needy families living in the Coachella Valley, Father Joe's Villages assumed management of Nightengale Manor, a 30-day emergency shelter in northwest Palm Springs.
Catholic Charities had managed the facility for the past decade. Last year the organization approached the Villages about taking over the facility.
We entered into talks with Catholic Charities and found that we could expand the excellent services it has provided the homeless of Palm Springs, says Father Joe Carroll, president of the Villages.
Ken Sawa, CEO of Catholic Charities, says the new management team brings specialized services and experience to the manor.
Because of the focus, expertise and resources of Father Joe's Villages, I am confident that the homeless families served at the shelter will receive the best possible care and assistance, he says.
Case management, adult basic eduction, counseling and other rehabilitative services are available to residents of the shelter. Nightengale clients are also given the opportunity to enter Martha's Village & Kitchen, a Father Joe's Villages operation in Indio, Calif., that offers short- and long-term residential programs focusing on returning homeless families to a position of self-sufficiency.
Father Joe says his staff has worked cooperatively with the emergency shelterís neighbors to ensure a smooth transition.
Folks who live nearby (the facility) were concerned, but we want to let them know we are good neighbors and offer our services to the less fortunate in a manner that is unobtrusive to the surrounding community.
